About the Surgical Outcomes Club
Who We are
The Surgical Outcomes Club (SOC) is a vibrant community of surgeons and scientists united by one mission: to improve surgical practice and outcomes. We explore how healthcare systems, policies, and innovations impact real-world results — and strive to ensure every patient benefits.
Our Mission
To advance knowledge, shape policy, and empower the next generation of surgical outcomes researchers. We do this by:
- Hosting high-impact events and scientific sessions
-
Facilitating collaboration across institutions
-
Championing research that leads to real change
Our History: A Legacy of Leadership
1990s – A small group of visionary surgeons, led by Drs. John Birkmeyer and John Clarke, began meeting to discuss improving outcomes research in surgery.
2005 – The first Annual Scientific Session was held in San Francisco, CA, with sponsorship from Dr. Michael Zinner and the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
2006–2008 – SOC bylaws were formalized, and membership dues introduced to support long-term growth.
Today – SOC continues to grow as a hub for discussion, collaboration, and the development of future leaders in surgical research.
